Classes of boat sailed at the club
North Staffs Sailing Club has four main dinghy classes which are listed below, however we also have a healthy mixed handicap fleet. Any type of dinghy can be sailed at the club; other classes regularly sailed are Merlin Rocket, National 12, Streaker and Red Eye Solutions. Please click the links or the icons on this page, or see the links page for further information on these classes.
Enterprise
The Enterprise is a four metre sailing dinghy designed by Jack Holt. It is one of the largest classes in the world and this popularity is due to its excellent qualities both as a cruising and a two-man racing boat. There are close to 23,000 registered boats.
GP14
GP 14 is a 14 ft "general purpose" sailing dinghy, it is as well suited to full on racing as it is to family cruising. There are large numbers of GP's sailed across the UK with a healthy regional & national circuit run by the class association. Used boats are widely available in wood, GRP & the latest boats in FRP.
Laser
The laser is probably the most popular single handed sailing dinghy in the world; it is the Olympic single handed class for both men (full rig) & women (radial rig). Used boats are widely available although good examples usually sell very quickly. The beauty of the laser is that due to the strict one design rules of the class, old boats can compete on the same level as new ones. The boat is available with a choice of 3 rigs - 4.7m for junior & youth competition, radial for lighter sailors up to about 11 stone & standard rig ideally suited to sailors around 12 - 13 stone.
Solo
A single handed dinghy fitted with a powerful fully battened sail. The solo as has a healthy UK following with an active regional and national circuit. An ideal alternative to the Laser dinghy.
